MAX FARMER

Hello everyone!
My name is Max (he/him) and I am the creator of Self Harm Anonymous. When I found out that there were no in-person Self Harm meetings in Oregon, my jaw hit the floor. I thought to myself "how is it that there isn't a group like this already?" During that research I found a lot of the resources called similar groups "Self Mutilators" and I despised that word; it feels extremely negative. When creating this group, my goal was to work together with the community to destigmatize self harm while bringing support to those who are still struggling. Through my experience in attending multiple Anonymous groups, I realized it didn't feel like I could talk about my self harm, like really talk about it. It felt like a topic I could only graze over and not go deeper with it. I needed a space where I could go deeper, where I could really talk about it. Thus, this group was created. I wanted it to be different from other Anonymous groups, so that's what I did. On September 1st, 2024, the very first SHA meeting was held.
After almost 3 months of starting, I met my now boyfriend. I shared about my meeting, and it turns out he was as passionate about this idea as I was. With his help we've got actual recovery chips, business cards, informational pamphlets, stickers, and this very website. This website wouldn't exist without him, he built it from the ground up. He poured his heart and soul into making this, and I think it definitely paid off.
Every Sunday at 1:00pm I finally have a safe place I can go to and both give support and get support from my peers. People actually come to the meeting. They color, fidget, bring their crafts, and support each other.
I am incredibly grateful for this meeting. It wouldn't have started unless I checked my-self into inpatient when I was 28 for the first time in my life and got sober. That was March of 2024. As of writing this in June 2025, I haven't self harmed in a year and four months and have been sober from my DOC for just as long. I can't imagine my life without this meeting. I want to continue to grow this group and inspire others to start their own wherever they are at. I want groups in all 50 states. I want to destigmatize self harm, and show everyone who struggles with it that they are not alone.
Thank you for coming on this journey with me. You are loved.
JESSE AMBRIZ

Hello! My name is Jesse (he/him), and I am a facilitator of Self Harm Anonymous. In addition to helping facilitate our in person meetings, I manage our website and social media. I struggled with my active addiction to self harm for over 10 years (actually, it began well before that, but that’s another story) before I met my now-boyfriend, Max, had the amazing opportunity to become involved with SHA. I am passionate about helping others find their path to recovery while continuing on my own; I believe that finding a community of people who have similar experiences is a keystone of that. I am overjoyed to be able to have such an integral part in SHA as a whole, and want nothing more than to see this meeting grow to be able to bring support to all who need it. In my free time, I like to crochet and watch ghost hunting videos with my boyfriend.
